Overcast Fall Family Session at a Roseville Park | Sacramento Family Photographer

There is something so special about photographing families more than once. Getting to see how much changes in just a couple of years is always one of my favorite parts of being a family photographer.

This sweet family met me for their fall session at a park in Roseville, CA, and this time they brought along grandma and their newest little family member. And let me just say… it was SO cute. The way grandma looked at the kids, the way dad held the baby up and made her smile, and the way mom soaked it all in. Those are the moments that make these sessions feel like more than just pictures.

Big sister is also turning THREE, and she was such a little star. She had the cutest dress, the sweetest expressions, and that perfect mix of toddler independence and “I still want to be held sometimes.” I loved watching her bounce between being playful and then coming right back in for hugs.

What made this session even more memorable was how different the vibe was compared to their first session a couple of years ago.

Last time, we had the kind of fall evening photographers dream about. Tons of warm color, glowing sunset light, and that golden hour magic that feels like it belongs in a movie.

This time, we had something totally different. A blanket of overcast clouds that honestly felt like it has been a permanent part of this fall season.

But you know what? It was beautiful in its own way.

Overcast skies give such soft, even light, and it creates images that feel cozy, timeless, and a little moodier in the best way. The greens stay rich, skin tones stay soft, and the whole session ends up feeling calm and intimate.

And honestly… I get it. My own family portraits this year were taken under heavy clouds too, and they’re some of my favorite photos we’ve ever taken. Sometimes the “perfect weather” isn’t the golden sunset. Sometimes it’s the soft light, the cuddles, and the real moments.

This session was full of those.

If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to schedule family photos, consider this your reminder that you don’t have to wait for everything to be perfect. The season doesn’t have to be glowing, the sky doesn’t have to be sunny, and your kids don’t have to behave the entire time. You just have to show up, love on your people, and let me capture the rest.

Because years from now, you won’t remember what the weather looked like. You’ll remember this stage. This season. These faces.

And that is always worth documenting.

If you’re looking for a family photographer in Roseville or the Sacramento area, I’d love to chat with you about planning your next session.

Fall sessions always book quickly, so feel free to reach out early to grab a date.
